Our final race of the season has come to a close, and what a great event it was. There was plenty of excitement and drama as we entered the final weekend. A double race weekend meant there was plenty to go on for our top 3 in SR3. Any one of them could take home the championship if the weekend went right for them. There were also several battles to be decided all through the top ten in points.

Great November weather and the newly completed facilities at Spring Mountain Raceway made for a great finale.

The race saw a split start. The SR3’s got the green flag and 20 seconds later the Invitational cars got the green. We wanted to make sure the points race was not affected by cars outside the class. It was a great Invitational race with John Morris and Don Simons battling it out the whole race. They swapped positions several times. Don Simons set the fastest race lap but in the end John Morris got to the checkered flag first.

The hotly contested SR3’s saw the top 3 in points all running together on track. Tim Day and Dave Tweedlie ran side by side for several corners on the start and were close the whole race. Matt Maddox had a tight race with Craig Oka. Matt made a great pass on Craig and made a charge to the front. He was pressured to beat Tim and Dave to have a chance at the championship. He reeled in the 2 leaders and as he tried to make a pass on Tim Day they almost made contact and Matt spun off the road trying to avoid an accident. The spin ended Matt’s chances at the Championship and made it a 2 car battle for the final round on Sunday.

Saturday night Don Simons hosted a year end party at the Palms in Las Vegas. Everyone showed up and it was a great time. We had a 10:00 pm cut off so we could all get back to the track early in the morning. Thanks again Don for a great party!

Sunday’s qualifying made thing even more interesting in the points, and caused a bit if controversy. Tim Day broke a transmission in his SR3 potentially ending his chase in the championship. He made a call to John Morris who allowed him to use a school car for the final race. The group voted and unanimously agreed to allow Tim a chance at the championship. Tim’s qualifying time was not allowed and had to start from the back. All this opened the door wide open for Dave Tweedlie to win the championship. He got the extra point for qualifying on the pole. If he set the fastest lap and beat Tim by 7 positions on track he would win.

The battle was hard fought. Dave Tweedlie got the jump on the start and sailed to his 3rd win in a row. Since his incident at Thunderhill Dave has not been beaten? We must have done a hell of a job repairing his car!!! Tim started last and moved up to 6th. He pressured Craig Oka for several laps but was not willing to take the risk to pass. All Tim needed to do was finish there. Cyrus Shargh made a pass on Matt Maddox toward the end of the race to take second place. The Grandfather of speed came home with a respectable forth and the Okanator rounded out the top five. Great season guys!
