2008 Radical West Cup - Spring Mountain - 17th March 2008

2008 Radical West Cup - Spring Mountain
Round #2 of the Radical Cup Series was held on our home turf at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch. Most of the drivers are club members of the Country club so experience on this track is plentiful. Great weather and great track conditions made for some exciting racing and new track records both days. After a couple practice sessions Saturday morning it was straight to qualifying where we saw Dave Tweedlie reset his own track record in the SR3 class by almost a second!

When the green flag waived Dave Tweedlie led the field into turn 1 with Tim close on his heels. The Godfather Bob Majorino once again turned on the speed to pull an incredible pass on Craig Oka going into turn 8. Shortly before the start of the race the winds picked up and by the end of the race we found ourselves in what we felt like a tornado. About mid race our leader Dave Tweedlie thought he felt a tire going down and started to slow. Painfully he pointed Tim, Bob and Craig by, trying to limp home to the checkered.

Unfortunately for Dave it was actually the wind blowing his car around on the straights making it feel like it wasn’t tracking right. With one lap to go and running on fumes Tim Day suddenly slowed on the back side of the circuit which handed the lead over to Bob Majorino. Bob came home with the win and Craig Oka was a close second. Cyrus did a great job finishing third on his bald Dunlop tires and Steve Nicklin had his personal best finish coming home fifth.

Sunday ran the same schedule as Saturday. Most drivers put on new tires for Sunday and we saw track records fall yet again. Tim Day found the biggest gains picking up 3 seconds from his best time Saturday and was 1.3 seconds faster than Dave Tweedlie’s previous track record. Nice job Tim!!! Bruce Jamison one of our newcomers to the series gets the most improved award by picking up 5 seconds from his previous best time.

The race saw Tim Day dominate from start to finish. Bob Majorino never gave up and stayed within striking distance in the event Tim had a bobble. Dave started closing toward the end of the race but ran out of time. Cyrus with his new tires picked up 3 seconds to come in fifth. Bruce Jamison had a great first race weekend (likely due to the expert instruction) finishing sixth.

Special Thanks go to Aaron Bitterman and the Speed Ventures crew for putting on such a great event. Radical Ventures crew kept everything running great and once again Thanks to all the drivers for their support.

Next round is: March 29 & 30 at Thunderhill for Rounds 5 & 6 of the Radical Cup.
