Radical Challenge competitors will benefit from a 20 per cent hike in racing time as part of a format and calendar revision for the 2019 season, while a refreshed pricing structure will reward early-bird booking and customer loyalty – all following extensive consultation and feedback invited from series competitors.
As Radical’s premier UK championship, the Challenge – which caters for the Peterborough marque’s hugely popular SR3 model – will return with a seven-round calendar for 2019.
The schedule incorporates many legendary domestic circuits, such as Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Donington Park’s grand prix layouts, as well as retaining its showpiece summer ‘festival’ visit to Spa-Francorchamps – the home of the Belgian Grand Prix.
Consistently voted by drivers as one of the most popular circuits, the championship will double up at Donington Park, following the closure of regular venue Rockingham at the end of 2018. The season will be bookended by visits to both the Leicestershire circuit’s National and GP layouts.
Together with the new dates, Challenge competitors will also benefit from increased track time across the calendar. Traditionally the series has featured qualifying ahead of a single sprint race and two endurance events with a mandatory pit stop, allowing drivers to share a car, and the cost, should they wish.
Building on competitor feedback, the length of the endurance events will increase to 50 minutes each, with most rounds featuring a 20-minute qualifying session, a 20-minute sprint and one endurance outing running on the Saturday, before a second endurance event on Sunday.
Whilst honouring the same format, action at Oulton Park and Brands Hatch will take place on the same day.
Alex Mortimer, Radical Sportscars Motorsport and Engineering Director, said: “For 2019 we’ve really pushed the boat out to deliver what our current drivers and teams have been asking for. When we asked the paddock what they’d like for 2019, the answer was universal – ‘more track time’.
“We’ve not only delivered that but we are also working hard to keep entry fees close or equal to 2018, emphasising the fantastic value the Challenge series, and the SR3, represents. Those costs will be confirmed as soon as possible, in-line with the published regulations and entries opening early next year, but we’re already looking strong for an exciting new season.”
