The Fastest Amateur Racing Action Pound For Pound, Just Got Better

Back to the news

Radical Sportscars is delighted to announce its UK racing formulae for 2021, with a series of new enhancements designed to  create even more options for UK racers – and those looking to enter competitive amateur racing for the first time – to compete in the fastest single-marque championships in the UK.

All models across Radical’s range of purpose-built, British-made sports racing prototypes are now eligible to compete in Radical factory-supported race series in the UK, hitting some of the best UK and European circuits in 2021. At all UK Championship events Radical is there, with an enhanced Hospitality offering, Factory Technical Support, and a rolling parts warehouse. It’s all designed to ensure that Radical competitors maximise every on-track - and off-track - minute of their race weekend!

For 2021 the Radical programme offers a suite of format options and levels of competition to satisfy any racer from novice to veteran.  All Radical racing is fast, safe, and exhilarating thanks to the high-performance, high-downforce, yet extremely reliable Radical racing car range. Full factory support at all events keeps it that way. Across all of Radical’s global race championship network, from Silverstone to Spa, Laguna Seca to Bathurst and beyond, Radical’s “spec racer” formats keep the field level and the competition focused on  driving skill, not the size of your wallet. And being light-weight and purpose-built for racing, Radical sportscars deliver a pure racing experience at lap times faster than other race cars costing several times as much.

In 2021 Radical will be re-uniting its various UK Championships to run on the same weekends throughout the season, on the best and longest circuits the UK has to offer, plus the amazing Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. These Radical Weekends will bring together Radical racers from our long-standing SR1 Cup and Challenge Championships and welcome the return of Radical’s Club Sprint and Club Enduro Cups – new for 2021 but based on popular Radical series’ from the past. Radical racing has always been about the strong and passionate Radical community so bringing these series together again will enhance the spirit of “friends and competitors” that makes Radical racing fun and rewarding. From a family privateer effort, to full end-to-end support from experienced Radical race teams, all are welcome to the Radical paddock.

In addition to Radical’s comprehensive UK racing program, 2021 marks the launch of a new series of Radical European Festivals – race and track events giving all Radical owners, and would-be owners – opportunities to experience the great “bucket list” Grand Prix circuits of Europe. Full details on the calendar and format of these events will be released soon!

"Racing with Radical is a great experience. The championship organisation and technical support is so professional and just so helpful. They all go beyond what I would expect. Racing a Radical is a similar cost to running a season in other, much slower championships - and more fun!"

Veteran Radical Challenge competitor

The Radical Challenge returns for its 20th season as Radical’s premier UK & European race series. Officially the UK’s fastest single-make sportscar championship, the highly competitive Radical Challenge continues to showcase pure driving talent, and is fully factory supported by the biggest sports prototype brand in the world. Under controlled ‘spec racer’ regulations including factory sealed engines, the Challenge is the perfect championship for the experienced national racer to go to the next level with true downforce racing at lap times faster than BTCC & GT4 cars.

The Challenge format continues in 2021 as a mix of sprint races with a longer endurance length finale. This format supports both Solo drivers and 2 driver teams, who can share the race time equally. The Challenge events will burst into action on Saturday with morning qualifying and two 25-minute sprint races, whilst Sunday’s racing sees the introduction of a second 15-minute qualifying session to determine the grid for that day’s 45-minute endurance race, including a mandatory pitstop/driver change for teams. Sunday’s racing will count for as many points as Saturday – so if you’ve had a nightmare first day, you can make amends on the second.

In-line with Radical’s other international championships, the Challenge welcomes back the Masters Class to the UK after a 5-year hiatus. For the first time this will feature the awesome new turbocharged Radical SR10, as well as allowing Radical SR8, RXC and RXC Spyder models to join the Challenge grid. Solo drivers and driver teams can continue to contest the longstanding Supersport class for SR3s of all generations, including the recently-launched SR3 XX.

The ninth season of Radical’s highly rated entry-level championship continues to offer the best way for motorsports fans to start on their own racing path, and for racers from other series to enter the world of factory supported sportscar racing at a very attractive budget. While being Radical’s “entry level race car”, the SR1 is a full-on purpose-built race car generating lap times faster than GT4 cars costing three times as much.

Radical offers the SR1 as a complete “motorsport starter kit” comprising a new Radical SR1 car, ARDS race licencing support, a Radical race suit, track instruction, factory technical training, and a season’s SR1 Cup Race Entry fees – making it the UK’s most compelling entry point into circuit racing.

The SR1 Cup continues its popular single day format as a Saturday race event featuring a 20-minute qualifying session and two 20-minutes sprint races. The exception is the headline Silverstone GP Invitational round, where SR1 Cup and Challenge combine on the grid for the ultimate high-performance British Summertime at the UK’s most famous Grand Prix circuit. SR1 Cup racers are also welcome to join the Radical Spa Invitational Festival at the historic Belgian circuit as a non-points event within the Challenge format.

A new feature for 2021 is the option for SR1 Cup racers to extend the track action with a ‘Sunday Supplement’, joining the Challenge endurance programme on Sundays. This allows SR1 racers more race time, a taste of the Radical Challenge enduro with pit-stop format as a one-off, or the option of a complete series of Sunday races by joining the Club Enduro Cup field.

"The SR1 championship was amazingly helpful in getting me started in motorsport. It’s an accessible and cost-effective racing series, the racing is a fantastic experience from start to finish and the SR1 is a far superior car, easier to drive, faster and cheaper to run than its rivals - thank you."

2020 SR1 Cup Competitor

Superb new additions to the Radical race mix for 2021 are the Club Sprint & Club Enduro Cup titles, specifically aimed at the ‘Clubman’ SR3 1300/1340cc competitor.

These allow solo drivers to compete for honours within the Challenge weekend framework at a lower budget level, contesting just the Saturday Sprint or Sunday Enduro racing programmes – or both - for independent Club Cup trophies.
Specifically formulated to help the privateer and self-run competitors as well as those looking to enter SR3 competition for the first time, Club Sprint and Enduro affords the amateur racer additional flexibility to juggle their racing thrills with a busy home and work life, and welcomes owners of older, factory-standard SR3 models.

Costs will be carefully controlled based on driver feedback, and we anticipate that this new streamlined offering will become a popular additional rung on the Radical racing ladder, whether for SR1 graduates, returning Radical racers from other series, and those looking for a more relaxed and flexible Radical racing experience.

We’re also pleased to announce a revised Provisional Calendar for the 2021 season. The season has been put together to visit the best, longest circuits in the UK, with the ideal spread of six events (5 UK and 1 European) evenly spaced between April and September with one race meeting each month.

Careful consideration has been given to avoid calendar clashes with other Radical track opportunities, as well as commencing later in the season than originally planned to minimise the winter impact of Covid-19 and maximise the best British climatic conditions. For all Championships, each circuit configuration is the longest variation possible, so if you’re looking for a season of “bucket-list” circuits, the Radical championships are for you!

The Spa-Francorchamps and Silverstone events bring SR1 Cup competitors onto the same grid as the Radical Challenge and Club Cups, (the former as an Invitational event, the latter as a points-scoring round) and underpin a new series of Radical European Festival events for Radical drivers across the globe. These international events will include non-competitive trackday time alongside Radical races, and will welcome owners of all Radical models back to the factory-supported fold.
